Classic cars survive fire at auto body shop
EUGENE, Ore. -- Thousands of dollars worth of cars nearly went up in smoke at a body shop in West Eugene.
The fire broke out at around 5:30 Tuesday morning at Metalworks Classics on Arrowsmith Street. Scott Bishop with the Eugene Fire Department says he believes the fire started with some rags and those flames then spread to a bend that burned. The fire was able to be contained to a small section of the building.
"This is where all body work paint starts and luckily didn't get into the restoration shop," said owner Jon Mannila. "There are a lot of valuables over there -- not that these are not valuable, but it could have been a lot worse."
While the flames did not spread to the cars inside the building, the owner of the shop says they did suffer heat damage, but that can be fixed.
No word yet on how much damage to the Metalworks Classics building.
