Fire hits UO fraternity house
Members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity are safe after a fire broke out at their frat house late this afternoon.
Officials with Eugene Fire Department say a grease fire from a barbecue grill caused the blaze.
"There was a barbecue going, a grease fire happened on that and then it ignited the LPG tank underneath it and had a free burning LPG fire. Two 5-gallon containers caught fire and basically discharged their contents right against the building," said Eugene Fire District Chief Scott Bishop.
The fire damaged several windows on the first floor of the two story building and completely destroyed the nearby utility shed. Fire officials credit a sprinkler system inside the building in helping to minimize damage to the living areas.
Officials say no one was injured in the incident. The two-story frat house is home to forty students.
