Local public officials support a public option
By KVAL.com staffEUGENE, Ore. -- In the debate over health care reform, some county and city leaders are taking a stance in support of a public option health care plan. On Monday afternoon, Lane County Commissioners, the Eugene mayor and a Eugene City Councilor rallied with other advocates and community members in downtown Eugene. They say they want to send a message to the Oregon congressional delegation. "Our healthcare system is broken," said Mayor Kitty Piercy. "There are all kinds of people in each of our states and each of our communities that don't have healthcare coverage." "I've lived in different countries where they've had 'single-payer' which is what we call national healthcare, in Canada, England and Africa," said Diane Beurerman, a retired Eugene resident, "and it works." On Tuesday, the county commission will consider a resolution urging Congress to pass a healthcare reform that includes a public option. |
