Julia Cupp told KVAL News that she and her family are OK.

EUGENE, Ore. -- An Oregon family living at Fort Hood in Texas are OK after the worst mass shooting ever on a U.S. military base.

Julia Cupp of Stayton, Ore., lives in military housing less than three miles away from where the shootings took place. Her husband is currently in Iraq, but their family lives in off-base housing.

She told KVAL News that messages had been coming through a public address system to stay indoors and lock up. Local schools have taped up windows, and she was unable to pick up her son from school at the usual time.

"I'm worried because my son is 4 years old and he's stuck in the school right now with my neighbor," Cupp told KVAL News. "I know he's safe, but until he's home and safe, I'm still worried about it."

Cupp said military police and soldiers will be going door to door doing sweeps before the lockdown status is lifted.

The Oregon Military Department said two members of the Oregon National Guard and their families were visiting the base. They are unharmed. No Oregon Guard units are currently training at the base.
