Oh, snow! Storm frosts mountain passes
The scene on Santiam Pass Friday morning. EUGENE, Ore. -- Forecasters expect a storm to deliver up to 3 feet of snow to the Oregon Cascades by Saturday, making for hazardous snowy roads -- and high hopes that the ski season could open before Christmas. The National Weather Service expects 6 to 10 inches of snow to fall every 12 hours through Saturday night. The weather pattern calls for periods of intense snowfall at times. The snow level will fall to 3,500 feet Friday and Saturday and drop even lower Saturday night. That puts the freezing levels below the major mountain passes in the Cascades, like Santiam Pass (4,817 feet) and Willamette Pass (5,100 feet).
