MT. HOOD, Ore. - A fatal traffic crash on Highway 35 north of Mt. Hood Meadows closed this mountain route for hours. Seven people were injured, and the driver of one of the vehicles and 6-year-old daughter are dead.

Oregon State Police troopers are continuing to investigate a Saturday morning two-vehicle fatal traffic crash that happened on Highway 35 about five miles north of Mt. Hood Meadows, one of five ski resorts on Mt. Hood. The road is icy beneath the snow.

Preliminary information indicates the crash resulted in the death of one person and injuries to eight others. The 6-year-old girl died late Sunday night at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.

Around 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning a 1992 GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle with three occupants was driving southbound on snow-covered Highway 35 near milepost 69. The driver of the vehicle was Justin Wayne O'Neal, a 16 year old from Battle Ground.

The GMC Yukon was attempting to pass another vehicle when O'Neal lost control into the path of a northbound 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with six occupants, according to police.

The Jeep's driver, 23-year-old Emmanuel Torres from Madras, attempted to veer to the right to avoid the GMC Yukon, according to police. Nonetheless, the Jeep was struck in the driver's side and came to a rest in a ditch along the highway.

Torres was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was using safety restraints. The other Jeep occupants were:

  • His daughter, 6-year-old Letticia Torres, in the middle-left seat. She was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, and died in the pediatric intensive care unit late-Sunday night. Safety restraint use is unknown.
  • His son, 5-year-old Jose Torres, in the left-rear seat. He was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries and was in "critical condition" as of late-Saturday. Safety restraint use is unknown.
  • His wife, 23-year-old Marjean Alonso, in the front right passenger seat. She was using safety restraints and was transported by ambulance to Hood River Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She has been tranferred from Hood River to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, and is in "good condition" as of late-Saturday.
  • His wife's sister, 27-year-old Antonia Alonso, from Warm Springs, in the middle-right passenger seat. She was not using safety restraints and was transported by ambulance to Hood River Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Hood River tells KATU reporter Adam Ghassemi that she is in critical, but stable, condition.
  • Antonia Alonso's son, 11-year-old Isaac Reynoso from Warm Springs, in the middle-center seat. He was not using safety restraints. He was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University with serious injuries. On Saturday he was in the Intensive Care Unit there, in "fair" condition.

The three males in the GMC also were transported to a Hood River hospital. O'Neal was seriously injured and transported by ambulance to Hood River Hospital, then taken by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University. He was in the Intensive Care Unit as of Saturday night. Safety restraint use is unknown.

O'Neal's passengers have been identified as:

  • Right front passenger Josh David Muonio, age 16, from Battleground, Wash. He was using a lap safety restraint and was transported by ambulance to Hood River Hospital. He since has been released.
  • Center rear passenger Justin Theodore David, age 15, from Battleground, Wash. He was using a lap safety restraint and was transported by ambulance to Hood River Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He since has been released.

Oregon State Police troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation. The Hood River County Sheriff's Office, Parkdale Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.

Highway 35 was closed for about two hours after the crash. Monitor traffic updates.
