Ballerinas try to break record

EUGENE, Ore. - Ballet is considered a graceful dance, and Sunday hundreds of ballerinas tried to turn their art-form into a Guinness world record.

About 440 dancers from all over Oregon laced up their shoes and took to McArthur Court. They were trying to plie and pirouette their way to beating the Guinness record for largest ballet class in the world.

That record was set in Cape Town, South Africa, with 530 ballerinas. And though they fell short of that goal, organizers say it's for a great cause. "It's just for fun really to get some exposure to dance in our community and to support dance. This is national dance week so it's part of that and just to get the community together and have fun," explains organizer Megan Murphy.

Money raised through this event will support scholarships for dance and children's dance productions.
