EUGENE, Ore. -- Police took a 73-year-old man into custody for menacing early Tuesday morning after they say he refused to hand over a pistol he was hiding in his jacket pocket.
Police were called out to N. Danebo Ave. at around 4:25 a.m. Tuesday to find Bill Newman, 73, standing in the middle of the street.
Police said Newman was holding a flashlight in his left hand while his right was inside his jacket pocket.
Officers told Newman to take out his right hand multiple times, however he refused. Police took Newman to the ground and found that he had been gripping a pistol inside his pocket, officials said.
Officers placed the 73-year-old under arrest and cited him for menacing; Eugene Police said he was taken to the hospital for unrelated medical issues.
