Prosecutors allege girl died after being tortured

EUGENE, Ore. -- A mother and stepfather face aggravated murder charges for allegedly causing the death of their 15-year-old daughter through neglect, mistreatment, maiming and torture.

The McAnultys were arraigned by Lane County Circuit Court Thursday. They face another hearing in a week where they will be formally indicted on any charges brought by the grand jury.
Ambulance records show medics arrived at a Howard Avenue address at 8:04 p.m. Wednesday night and rushed a patient to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend Hospital.
The Lane County Sheriff's Office said a 911 caller reported the girl was having trouble breathing. She was declared dead at the hospital.
In charging the McAnultys, the district attorney filed the following charging information:
A. ANGELA DARLENE MCANULTY, and
B. RICHARD ANTHONY MCANULTY,
aka RICHARD ANTHONY GIBBONS,
Defendants.
The above-named defendants are accused on oath by the Lane County District Attorney as follows:

The defendants, on or about December 9, 2009, in Lane County, Oregon, under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life, did unlawfully and recklessly cause the death by neglect and maltreatment of Jeanette Marie Maples, a dependent person born August 9, 1993, contrary to statute and against the peace and dignity of the State of Oregon;
The State further alleges this crime occurred in the course of, or as a result of, intentional maiming and torture of the victim.
