New Springfield jail serves first 'customers'

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -  The practice runs are over and real inmates are starting to fill up the largest city jail in Oregon.

Police think it won't take long to see real results from the new Springfield jail.

"I think the dividends will be seen over time," says Police Chief Jerry Smith.

The grand opening for the $30 million lockup was Friday night with 2 inmates.

On Monday, the count swelled to 11, "five of which were inmates at the Lane County Correction Center on Springfield Municipal Court sentences," explains Captain Richard Golden, the jail commander.

Inmates included people like Travis Huffman and Watson Lee Bell, both charged with DUII.

"The people we held over the weekend, they would have been released at Lane County," Smith said.

The number of inmates at the jail won't stay at 11 for very long.  Give it another 60 days or so and officials say the transport van and the booking area will be much more busy.

Golden thinks in two months the new jail can reach 80 percent full.

More importantly for the chief is locking people up for crimes like breaking into cars, an epidemic in Springfield.

"They hit 20, 30 cars a night.  Some are 100 or more in a weekend.  While they're in jail, they're not going to be committing those crimes," says Chief Smith.

Plus making sure more of those people don't get a get-out-of-jail-free card from Lane County, where releases from the crowded county jail are common.

Seventeen corrections officers run the new Springfield Jail at a yearly cost of $2.5 million.
