Neighbor kicks in door, saves dogs from burning house

EUGENE, Ore. -- Jim Bowditch saw smoke come from his neighbor's house as he drove down Hilliard Lane Friday afternoon.

He called 911.

Then he kicked down the door, fought 5-foot flames with a garden hose, and rescued three dogs trapped inside the house.

"I just got low on the floor," he said, "and the neighbors got a garden hose and handed it to me, and I squirted out the fire and continued to look for the dogs."

Nobody else was home, and no one was hurt.
