Community honors soldier killed in Iraq

EUGENE, Ore. -- A funeral procession carried the body of Private First Class Erin McLyman, a Sheldon High School graduate killed in a mortar attack in Iraq, to a memorial service at the Eugene Faith Center.

McLyman, 26, died on March 13, 2010 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked her base with mortar fire. She was assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

People lined the route holding American flags, and a procession of motorcycles and military vehicles flying Old Glory accompanied her body from the Musgrove's West Lawn Memorial Park to the Eugene Faith Center.

EUGENE, Ore. -- The family of Private First Class Erin McLyman, the Sheldon High School graduate killed in a mortar attack in Iraq, has invited the community to participate in her funeral procession today.

In many cities and towns, the public has lined the procession route and saluted, placed a right hand over their hearts or displayed American flags to honor the fallen soldier, according to Mark Musgrove, who is handling the arrangements.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski has also ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff in memory of McLyman. The governor plans to attend the services for McLyman.

“Erin was an honorable soldier who served her country with distinction,” Kulongoski said in a press release. “She will be dearly missed by her friends and family, but her selfless service to our state and our nation and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

The procession is scheduled to leave West Lawn around 12:20 p.m. 

The route will proceed from Musgrove's West Lawn Memorial Park, 225 South Danebo, to the Eugene Faith Center, 1410 West 13th Avenue, via Danebo through West 11th Ave intersection, then south on Willow Creek, continue on Willow creek until it turns into West 18th Street, continue east on West 18th until Polk Street, left on Polk Street, then north on Polk to 14th .
