Elementary school, Youth Corps get $100,000 for solar power
EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Water and Electric Board named the winners of two Greenpower Grants Saturday. Adams Elementary School and Northwest Youth Corps each received $100,000.
"We were just thrilled when we found out," Adams Elementary Principal Pamela Irvine said.
Irvine said the money will pay for solar panels on their roof.
"We are going to have a real-time kiosk so that you can see the real-time energy that we are saving," Irvine said. "And we are going to have it so the neighborhood can come in at anytime and look at that."
Adams applied for the same grant in 2009. The school did not get the grant, and now Irvine says it was worth the wait.
Northwest Youth Corps Deputy Director Keith Brown said he also plans to use the money for a solar array. "We can serve more youth by not spending money on utility bills," Brown said.
Eugene Water and Electric Board President John Brown said participation in its Greenpower program has gone up more than 20 percent. That means they were able to give away more money than ever.
