A solar road trip

Alternative energy has been a hot topic for the last several years, now two local men are spending the next two weeks on the road promoting solar energy. Sam Walker who just graduated from OSU will leave tomorrow for a west coast trip with a solar trailer.

Walker and some classmates built the trailer for their senior project in mechanical engineering. He says his goal for the two thousand mile trip is to dispel myths on different sources of power and to encourage more use of alternative energy.

"People shouldn't be afraid of the future just because fossil fuels are going to be depleted there are solutions. One is solar it's not going to be the full answer it's not going to save the day, wind is another good opportunity," says Walker. Even on a rain soaked summer day, the trailer can still generate more than twenty percent energy for power.

Walker plans on making stops through small towns and big summer attractions like the Oregon State Fair. He won't be travelling alone, he'll have filmmaker Hovey Grosvenor with him who will be documenting the whole trip.

"I think we would be looking more at public television and maybe getting something that gets to where it should be and that's the children and other people dealing with all of these issues more so than we are.", says Grosvenor a filmmaker who's making a documentary about the trip. Grosvenor also hopes to submit it to some film festivals.
