EUGENE, Ore. - Doorman Duck has been greeting residents of the Eugene Hotel retirement center since 2003.
"It leaves like a warm feeling in your heart," said resident Rita Kingsley.
"So much for that," Pearl Evans said.
Evans made Doorman Duck's Oregon cap with her own hands. "About two or three days of constant knitting," she said.
Residents are used to people coming in from off the street and posing for a picture with Doorman Duck, so they didn't think twice when they saw two young men walk right in - until one of them stole the Duck's hat.
"Took the hat, stuck it under his arm and left," said Judi Jackson, the retirement center manager.
Before resident Ruth Wade realized what had happened, the front desk clerk had bolted out the door in pursuit of the thieves.
"She was already out she just absolutely flew," Wade said.
The men got away with the hat.
"It's sad," Kingsley said. "It's a sad commentary on how the kids of today are behaving."
One theft would be bad enough, but this is the third hat-napping Doorman Duck has endured.
"They would never think of the emotional impact of the residents," Kingsley said.
Adding insult to injury, the crime occured in broad daylight.
No grudges here, however. These ladies just want the hat back.
"Drop it off," Evans said.
"Return that cap," Kingsley said.

So some morons steal a hat for laughs, and that somehow is a "sad commentary" on all youths? That is an inflammatory and silly comment, and a TRULY pathetic excuse for headline.
If you get him a new hat, screw it on.
Well, for the moron who stole the hat....it will do you no good as it's one of a kind! How about you get a job and buy your own hat. For some reason I picture this person eating Mac & Cheese in their mother's basement, playing video games and screaming for seconds lol.... Just return it already!

I thank parents should be made responsible for their kids until they turn 25. These thugs have no respect for nobody or anybody's property. I think their parents must be pretty much like them. The law ignores them and the city helps them. The police should take the money from the city to keep these thugs in jail. The cops have the guns they should get all the money they need. lol
@Ah Shucks A few years back and I wouldn't have agreed with you. But. Here we are today and I can't believe what I'm reading most days, in regards to these kids. Don't really agree with 25, but I could see sharing in there punishment like community service for kids under 18. After 18 though there an adult and should be held accountable for there own actions. (ummmm. How your view changes as you get older.)
I'm sorry to have to say this, but some human beings are just selfish pigs only interested in themselves. They have no respect for others property, or the hard work others put into a project, they are only interested in their own needs and care not how they rob or steal to get what ever they want. If these PUNKS have a grandmother I wonder how they'd feel if someone stole from their own mother, aunt or grandmother? If they didn't care, then they are truly trash.
