Bloody dog abandoned at grocery store after botched neutering
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - An abandoned dog found badly bleeding at a grocery store from a botched neutering is on the mend after a Good Samaritan took him to the veterinarian and got a local dog rescue involved in his recuperation.
“They tried to slice the skin open in the scrotal sack to remove the testicle and apparently, when our client brought him in, things were hanging out," said Q Street Animal Hospital manager Beth Mitchell. "He was bloody and it was painful.”
The pit bull was found leashed to a shopping cart in front of the Springfield Safeway off Q Street, left with a bag of dog food and a handwritten sign that read, "Anything helps."
“I knew Q Street was here just across the street, so I decided to bring him over and see what they could do for him," said Jan Durham who works nearby the grocery store. "And at that point I realized, well, I’m going to either help him out or let Lane do it. And I know that Lane and Greenhill are pretty tight on resources, so I thought, I’m going to do this."
Durham brought the pit bull she nows calls Buddy to the Q Street Animal Hospital. Then she paid for the surgery that saved his life.
“He’s really good you know," said Durham as she craddled Buddy's head with her hands. "He’s a great dog. He’s so sweet. He’s smart. He knows how to sit and lay down.”
Durham said she is not angry with the person who hurt and left Buddy.
“I thought that they were just trying to something on the cheap and trying to save money," she said. "And, I don’t know what their circumstances were."
"At least they loved him enough to leave him in such a public place," she added.
Durham, who already owns a dog, is fostering Buddy until he can be adopted out.
"I made a promise not to take on another dog," said Durham.
Luv-a-Bull Pit Bull, a pit bull rescue organization out of Eugene, has agreed to handle Buddy's adotion.
A spokeswoman for Luv-a-Bull said Buddy is smart, sweet and good with kids. If you are interested you are asked to email Liesl Hardt at lieslhardt@gmail.com or call (541) 345-7511.

Ohh my.. such a good person.. Thanks to you who rescued this poor animal and took him to the vet at her own expense. It is really good to hear that their are still people who really care to those who needed their comfort. Once again thank you for saving his life..
Â
I am guessing since whomever the owner was decided to attempt such a thing, they were also not responsible enough to have this dog micro-chipped.... If they did, I am hopeful the vet or the rescue agency will pursue charges. If not, someone has to recognize this poor animal and will do the right thing by turning this person or persons in to the authorities. I don't care the breed, my own dog and husband were attacked by a pit bull and the dog was dealt with in a humane manner. No animal deserves such treatment. God Bless the woman who was compassionate and caring enough to seek treatment for Buddy. While there are certain guidelines that have to be met before someone is able to adopt through a shelter, I would implore people giving or selling animals privately, to take the extra time to ensure, if possible, that the animals are going to a loving home where they are capable of not only providing love but, the medical care these animals need. I started with 1 cat and now have 8 because people don't spay & neuter and when they can no longer care for them, they dump them or move out of homes and leave them behind. My husband has found them abandoned, abused and starving on job sites or in vacant units he has entered for maintenance. 3 of them have major medical issues and thanks to our country vet, it is affordable for us to provide them with the medical care and medicine that they need, attention and all the love they could possibly want. There is no excuse and no amount of love that would make a person do such a horrific thing. We have plenty of low cost spay & neuter clinics. Please if you know who the owner of this dog was, due the right thing, turn them into the authorites. The only happy endings will be if Buddy finds a loving forever home and the person responsible is charged with abuse & cruelty to animals. I hope that they can never live with themselves and are haunted daily!
these comments about blaming the economy or not having money to fix the dog is complete crap and is just an excuse.. I am on disability and dont get much but i have a cat and a dog..there are lots of help out there to get your animal fixed.if your to lazy or cant call or ask around about help then you shouldnt get pets. both my animals are fixed..I am very glad that they left the poor dog where it can be found but still no matter what the cicemstantces theres NO EXCUSE period for any animal to be treated like that ..
Thank goodness there are people out there with hearts! Poor doogie. I hope he finds a forever home. He is a beautiful dog. Quite frankly I blame our freaking economy on this dogs situation. The owners probably loved him, but had little or no money. Never mind they lacked brains, but at least they left him in a likely place to be saved. Thank you Jan Durham!
Thanks, Jan, for being human.
What a generous lady - and it does not matter what kind of dog he is? These are incidents that restore my faith in human nature - I wish good things for this kind person and beautiful dog...
This dog doesn't look like a pit bull. He looks like a plott hound. A neighbor had some. Looked just like this dog.
This dog looks more like a Plott Hound. I adopted a dog that looked just like him from the SPCA and was told she was a Pit Bull and then found out later she was a Plot Hound. Look them up on the web - he looks just like them.
Thank you for saving his life...he may have a little bully in him but not much....he looks like he has a little lab in him, maybe lab, boxer and bully. I have one that is a darker brindle, but the same look. I hope he finds his forever home soon. Good luck Buddy....
Badcrosbys, maybe you should keep your rude comments to yourself, talking about it should get its head cut off! what the hell is wrong with you!
Should have just cut it's head off..It's a pit bull and I have grandchildren...No quarter... Get rid of them all...
sorry baddc..but its not the breed thats bad its the owner who doesnt know how to treat there animals..even a little chihahua will be mean and attack a person if miss treated.. I have had pits and chows and both where around 5 boys..8,7,6 and 1 and 2.. i trusted those two beautiful dogs with them and they were very gentle and loved the boys very much..and yes i have even been bitten by a dog (and it wasnt a breed most people call mean ) the owner of that poor dog beat it with a stick for barking , my uncle actually toold the guy he catches him doing it again,,, a few bad words ...and he would take the dog and beat the owner instead,, wich my uncle did (on both acounts) then when my uncle took the poor thing (i was 8 yrs old) and i tried to pet it and love it but it was scared and hurt it tore my finger up ..I still have the svcar and i am almost 40 and still love and trust all animals
@badcrosbys Aw. honey, your ignorance is what should be gotten rid of. Take a happy pill and go play with your grandkids. What a wonderful example you are.
@badcrosbys I'm sad to see that you have grandchildren. I sure hate to see the likes of you perpetuated.Â
@badcrosbys i guess wisdom doesnt come with age that was a heartless comment maybe you should take a lesson from your grand children and show a little compassion.
i dont like dogs but that was so sweet
Durham's kindness has made me tear up. Big thanks to her.
Thanks Jan Durham.....see how Buddy shows his appreciation....dogs always have a strong bond with the one that saves them....
Oh I absolutely hate people! How could anyone do this to an animal of any kind, regardless of the breed (not a pit). This poor boy needs a good home with much kindness. He is beautiful and apparently someone took the time to have him as a pet. Too bad we can't neuter the owner in the same manner.
This is a Presa Canario not a pit. But either way shame on whoever hurt him.. perhaps like others have said - there will be security camera footage that shows who did left him there and they can be caught
@Jo He's too small to be a Presa Canario. Doesn't matter anyway, he's adorable and now he'll find a loving home with someone who'll care for him.
that dog was not a pit bull. (if it was it should have been put down)Â
@Iam Whiteman Let's not feed these dang idiot trolls. They are just looking for attention and they are not intelligent enough to warrant it.
@Iam Whiteman Too bad your parents didn't say the same thing about you. "oh look, Honey, a stupid, ugly kid, I guess we should put it down".Â
@Iam Whiteman Moronic statement if there ever was one. Anyone who suggests that the breed of dog should be the determining factor on whether it lives or dies just doesn't have a clue. IT'S NOT THE DOG'S FAULT THAT SOME OWNERS DON'T TREAT THEM WITH AN OUNCE OF RESPECT. A friend of mine has both a Rottweiler and Pit Bull mix at her home and they couldn't be more sweeter dogs.
@Iam Whiteman Maybe someone should put you down for being a moron.
@Iam Whiteman FOR REAL???????????  This dog should be "Put Down"  BECAUSE he is a Pit???  What a moronic statement!!!!
They are calling this dog a pit bull? I don't think so. Why do people insist upon branding all short-coated or brindle dogs as pits? Sure, he could have a little pit in him, but from these photos his features appear to be Lab or maybe hound.
@LH I have had several full-blooded and mixed pit bulls, who, when their ears and tails are not cropped, look very much like this dog.  There are several different types of pit bull, as well, such as red-nose, Colbie, American, Blue, etc and the different types do have different features.  If you notice his stance, his legs and the broad chest, it is pretty obvious to a pit-bull owner like myself that this dog either has A LOT of pit bull in him, or he could very well be full blooded. Regardless, any dog in a situation like this that is even suspected of having pit in their bloodlines needs to be watched over by a group with expertise in pits so he can be properly placed with someone who will treat him right and not end up being one of the statistics we so often hear about.
So glad Buddy had an angel come his way. I hate to see any animal suffer, it breaks my heart. That and children. Our society should never tolerate abuse of children or animals we are civilized or so we would like to think so.
If I had been there yesterday I would have done the same. Thank you for helping buddy, you have made a friend for life even though he will not be living with you he will always remember you and what you did for him. Adoption of these animals is not always easy but most of them just want to be loved and cared for. They are some of the best pets you could ever have.
I recall seeing that dog on the street corner with a transient a few months back off Gateway St. Sad that the bum would leave the dog tied to the shopping cart injured with his pan handling sign. For those who feel that all bums treat their pets great, you are wrong. Many times they just abandon the dogs and cats when they feel they cannot take care of them anymore. I rescued one of those abandoned dogs that ended up at the pound and scarred for life. She loves some people and children, but when we drive by pan-handlers on the street corner, she snarls and barks at them like they are animals with hackles in the air. Not all transients treat their animals with love and yet how can they take care of their animals when they cannot even take care of themselves?
@KenzieDogg At least the transient had the decency to leave him to get help instead of what many people do, just abandon them.
@RTG Decency and what was done to this poor animal are as opposite as anything that can be found. Whoever did this has absolutely not one hint of decency in them. It would have been "decent" to just surrender the dog to a shelter.Â
It is a good time to point out that Luv a Bull rescue does a lot for all types of dogs and is staffed by loyal volunteers that take in these animals, foster them, train them and love them.  Check out their website, adopt a dog and know that Buddy is n, ot the only abused animal out there.  They took in a pit pup that was a bait dog, yes a dog that is  used as bait for dog fighters.  Open your hearts and your doors.  A dog is your best friend and these are 2nd chance dogs who are amazing
The sheer horror of this is mind boggling. I truly hope that the cretin who did this to this poor animal is caught, prosecuted, jailed and neutered by his fellow inmates....with their teeth 'cause they are not allowed to have blades.Â
@the buttcut words do not do much, you seem outraged, how about helping make a difference?
Â
@MarineMom You think I'm outraged? Yes, I am. Don't you think that what was done to this poor animal is outrageous?Â
@MarineMom You assume that I don't help make a difference. You don't know me or what I do. I am currently fostering a pitbull female, a boxer and a dalmation. I own a pug, a siberian husky and a papillon. Would you like to see my dog food bill for a month? Please don't make assumptions @the buttcutÂ
the dog said, " Thought I was going to get tutored, not neutered"
and the city of eugene council wants to give homeless people free land. Great idea. We can pay to clean up after them, we can pay for the increase in police use when they get in drunken fights, we can pay for the shelters, we can pay basically for everything. Did you see the mess that was left for a few volunteers to clean up at Occupy Eugene? When it was time to work, most of the persons exploiting the opportunity left. I would rather the city find a couple of single parent families in our community that need help to pay their bills, cover health insurance, rent and food and give the money to them.
and just what exactly does your rant have to do with this story of this poor animal? Did you even read the story before you posted? Â
@Sloan Kettering While I appreciate your sentiments Sloan, I would prefer city leaves this working single mom alone.  I have a rescue pit and Luv A Bull does awesome work.  If you want to help buddy, pick up some bags of dog food and take it to the shelter or give them a bit of time to play with all the doggy dogs that live up there
Â
I don't like it when homeless people use a dog to get more sympathy. Â When I see homeless people asking for help along with thier dog, sometimes I have more empathy for the dog than for them. They usually had some choice in getting into their situation, but the dog has no choice and sits there on the cold pavement.
I hope you realize that they dont use the dog for your sympathy, that dog is their  best friend as well as their only form of protection.  I use to work with homeless vets and they would feed their dog before they would eat themselves.  Go to Hwy 99 shelter on a Sunday when there is a free vet clinci and see how much they care about their animals, the person who did this to their dog was dumber than a box of rocks but had the mind to turn their dog over to somewhere that they would get help
Â
And I figure if he can afford to own a dog (or stand there and smoke), he can't be too hungry doesn't need my hand out.
I think you can have your animals neutered by a professional for like $40. Sounds like a ton, but it might save you the time to have to abandon your dog when he bleeding to death due to your ignorance. Â
@Michael Michaels where I live it costs over $100.00 for a male, more for a female, (both depend on size)Â and if you're homeless, $40.00 or $100.00 wouldn't make any difference, if you don't have it.
Was that the rubber band technique?
@Michael Michaels Are you kidding? Did you even read the story? There was BLOOD! The rubber band method does not involve BLOOD! The poor animal was butchered and left to bleed to death. READ the story!
 @the buttcut   Calm down dude.Â
