LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- A 29-year old Cottage Grove man on a bicycle was struck and killed on Interstate 5 Saturday night, after witnesses say he rode out in front of a Sutherlin woman who was heading south near Cottage Grove.
Police have identified the man as Casey Michael Pitts-Carroll, last known to be living as a transient in the Cottage Grove area. Pitts Carroll previously lived in Eugene.
Oregon State Police troopers say that at around 9:45 p.m., Amber S. Vincent, 26, of Sutherlin, was heading south at about milepost 176, when the man rode out in front of her 2011 GMC Denali.
Witnesses said that the man was riding north on the south bound lane, when he tried to cross in front of Vincent.
The man was trapped underneath the vehicle, and when medical responders arrived on scene minutes later, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the man was not wearing reflective clothing. They also said he had no lighting on his bicycle.
Vincent and her two children, ages 2 and 4, were not injured.
The southbound lanes were closed for about two hours. but police say traffic was able to move by the scene.
OSP was assisted by South Lane Fire and Rescue, Cottage Grove police and ODOT.
Police are still investigating the crash.
