Bids are in for removal of Japanese dock from Oregon beach

NEWPORT, Ore. -- Debris from the Japanese tsunami is continuing to wash up along the Oregon coastline. This has caused a spike in visitors to the coastline, hoping to get a glimpse of the foreign phenomenon.

Amidst the excitement surrounding the debris the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department put out a call to get the famed Newport dock removed. The department announced Wednesday that it received bids from six companies to complete the job.

Bids were submitted by companies all over the northwest, from coastal towns to places as far as Vancouver, Washington. Even Springfield's Statewide Contract Service submitted a bid on the project.

The parks department will review the bids and said that checking references for the may take a couple days.

The dock washed ashore at Agate Beach, one mile north of Newport. Since that time Oregon Parks and Rec said it has seen record numbers to Agate Beach. In the last week alone they have seen nearly 12,800 vehicles in the park's parking lot, up from 2,077 vehicles last year. 

Along with the dock cleanup project the OPRD and other partners are working on a coastwise plan on how to dispose of debris that will up in the future. The parks department asked coast visitors and residents to help by telling department officials about large deposits of debris.
