Don Sherwood describes what kind of damage gets done to a home's plumbing system during the Thanksgiving holiday.

EUGENE, Ore. - Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year, and it is also the busiest day of the year for plumbers.

Don't put turkey bones in the toilet.

May seem like a no-brainer, but Don Sherwood with Roto-Rooter says it happens.

“I've had customers where their kitchen sink is plugged up… well they'll get rid of it by flushing it down the toilet and we're coming out the next day to auger out a chicken bone or a turkey bone,” said Sherwood.

Plumbers say the day after thanksgiving is their busiest day of the year. After the dinner guests stuff their faces, holiday hosts often stuff their garbage disposals.

“It's the fats, oils, and greases on the holidays will plug it up and make it final,” said Sherwood.

If you're having family visit, there's a good chance they will tax your sewer system with the increase in shower, toilet, and washing machine time.

Sherwood says they also get plenty of calls about things getting  knocked down sink drains.

“Clear the stuff away from the sink and maybe just make sure they have good screens over the drains so you don't get hair down in there,” said Sherwood.

He said that another leading problem they receive on Black Friday is for clogged shower drains. Asking guests to space their showers out by 15 minutes can help a slow system.
