Body of swimmer swept away by Willamette River found

EUGENE, Ore. - The body of a drowning victim who disappeared Sunday while swimming in the Willamette River has been recovered.

Allen R. McGill, 40, of Oakridge, Ore., disappeared Sunday afternoon at 4 from a swimming hole beneath Beltline Road, upstream from where the body was found.

"We got a call that he had been struggling and floating down the river, and he disappeared around the corner heading north," said John Miller with Lane County Search and Rescue.

The Eugene Fire Department searched the river for about an hour but couldn't locate the man Sunday.

The victim's body was spotted early Monday morning by an employee at River Ridge Golf Course in North Eugene, according to the sheriff's office. The employee spotted what looked like a body on an island in the river around 7 a.m.

McGill's death was one of two drowning deaths in Lane County on Sunday.
