Bomb squad responds to governor's offices at Oregon Capitol
SALEM, Ore. - The bomb squad responded to the governor's office at the Oregon State Capitol after an unknown man left a package there Tuesday morning.
About 20 employees were asked to leave the office space after state troopers responded at 10:50 a.m.
Bomb technicians responded and x-rayed the package, determing it contained paper items.
Employees were allowed back into the office area at 11:25 a.m.
Oregon State Police identified and took into protective custody for a mental evaluation a 48-year old Salem-area man related to the package.
The man was taken to Salem Hospital for the evaluation and was not arrested.
If this guy is not nuts, and is sane enough to have formed the idea of frightening, threatening or otherwise causing alarm he should be arrested for harrassment or what ever crime is appropriate. Then if convicted, he pays for the Troopers who responded, the bomb squad, his attorney, and any other costs related to this incident. If he has to work the rest of his life to pay the bill, so be it. There has to be a stop to this kind of stuff. The tax payer should not be burdened with the cost of irresponsibility and lawlessness. There is way too much of this kind of stuff anymore and it has to be made undesirable to the potential perpetrator.
