VERNONIA, Ore. – A 12-year-old boy carried his grandmother to safety after a propane heater exploded in their home and started a fire on Friday.
Seth Cutright said he smelled the leaking gas just before his grandmother, Rose Cutright, lit a cigarette and their home exploded in flames.
“It was like ‘boom.’ A flash before your eyes,” said Seth.
The fire broke out just before 3 p.m.
Seth and Rose were the only family members home during the explosion and fire.
“My grandma was on fire,” he said. “Not completely on fire, just a little bit. Then when I was walking, it went out. I carried her outside and set her on the ground. I went to the next-door neighbor’s and said call the ambulance.”
The two are recovering at the Oregon Burn Center in Portland.
“I love you. I’m proud of you. You’re my hero,” Seth's father, Roger Cutright, said to his son.
Seth and Roger Cutright said they wanted to talk about the fire on TV because they are so grateful for the doctors at the burn center.
It took about three hours for firefighters to get the fire under control. They were able to save several cats and some chickens.
The Red Cross is helping the Cutright family.

One of the most important things Seth did besides his decision to rescue his Grandma was before entering burning room make sure he had enough air in his lungs. One breath of super heated air can scorch the lungs. Whether one burns gas, wood, electric  etc. make sure your friends and family heat there homes safe going into the long winter season.Â
such an inspirational young man this proves that there maybe some hope for today's youngsters and I agree the scars if any are a badge of honor
Good kid. A real hero. Â I hope he doesn't scar, but if he does, he should consider them evidence of his honor.
If it's illegal to drive in the vehicle with minor children while smoking, it should be illegal to smoke in a home where minor children live. Now with saying that, Seth you're a hero. Your grandmother and family are lucky to have such a smart, courageous hero in their midst.Â
@SillyHippie Oregon hasn't banned smoking in vehicles with minors.
OMG...awesome job little dude...hope you heal up good.
Wow... what a courageous young man. I hope he and his grandmother recover quickly.
You are a hero Seth. God bless you and your family. I hope you and your grandma heal quickly.
Good job young man, you can be proud of yourself.
Another good reason to not smoke, especially inside. Â Poor kid. Â
@justausername proper propane saftey is the issue here, not whether someone smokes in the house.  I use a lighter in the house for candles, finishing rope ends, starting a wood fire to name a few. Quick thinking kid.
@justausername You have a valid point, but perhaps it's not the time.
@PleaseBeSmart  @justausername If someone died maybe.  KVAL rarely does follow up stories so know is the time to bring in Hank HIll for some saftey talk on propane.
@drinkmorewater The smoking had nothing to do with it, so the OP was just taking the opportunity to criticize smokers. Two people were injured, and a young boy will possibly have some facial disfigurement... No one needs to die for a comment to be insensitive and in poor taste.
