COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - A teen died trying to rescue his younger brother from a creek Tuesday, July 1.
The sheriff's office on July 3 released the identity of the deceased: 16-year-old Scott Alexander Smith of Aloha, Oregon.
The younger boy, age 13, slipped on rocks and fell in the water near the top of Wildwood Falls on the Row River at Lasells Stewart Picnic Area.
Smith got down on the rocks in attempt to reach his brother but was unable to hold onto him due to the swiftness of the water, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.
Witnesses said the older brother went into the water in an effort to save the younger brother, and they both went down a narrow chute of water, the sheriff's office said.
The younger brother emerged from the water.
The older brother did not.
Lane County Search and Rescue Divers responded to search the area.
The older brother's body was recovered after a tow truck removed a large log from the water chute to allow access to the victim.
