EUGENE, Ore. - River Huntoon has Down syndrome.

His mom, Becca, says people often stare at her 18-month-old son.

"Don't stare. Talk to my son, say hey, and I'll introduce you," she told KVAL News. "This is who we are. This is our life. We have Down syndrome in our family, and we love it, and we embrace it."

The Huntoons took part in the 6th annual Buddy Walk for Down syndrome awareness last Saturday, put on by the Emerald Family Down Syndrome Network.

Gail Udell, co-president of the newtwork, said there are common misconceptions about people with Down syndrome.

"Just the low expectations of what they're able to do, they're happy all the time," she said.

The them of this year's Buddy Walk was "rocking the extra chromosome." That's what causes Down syndrome at a genetic level.
