COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - A woman died while taking out her garbage Monday afternoon when a driver crossed the oncoming traffic lane, hit her and drove off, police said.
State police officials said that Ramona Berg, 60 of Cottage Grove, died Monday, when at around 3 p.m. a Buick went off the road and hit her while she was taking her trash to the curb on London Road.
Police said that the driver, later identified Diana L. Smith, 63 of Cottage Grove, was headed south on London Road near Cottage Grove Lake when she crossed the northbound lane, went into the grassy shoulder and struck Berg while she was standing by her mailbox.
Officials said that Smith initially stopped and tried to revive Berg; but when she couldn't, she drove off.
After a brief investigation, state police said they found the suspect vehicle at a home 5 miles down the road. Officials said that officers arrested Smith at her home Monday evening.
Detectives said that they are still investigating the crash.
