Car goes off Hwy 22, crashes into creek

DETROIT, Ore. - A driver missed a curve and drove the car off Highway 22 into Sardine Creek near the Big Cliff Dam west of Detroit on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighers pulled driver Kathryn Hansman Spice, 69, and her husband Byron Spice, 78, from the car. The Portland couple was taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries.

A witness told state police Spice's 2001 Toyota Avalon missed a curve and drove straight off the highway, crashing through a guardrail and down the embankment into the creek.

Oregon State Police cited the driver for failing to drive within the lane.
