Car plows through yards: 'We heard smash, crash, boom, bang!'

EUGENE, Ore. - Eugene Police have taken one man into custody after he plowed through several backyards along Garfield Street in Eugene on Monday night.

Authorities said the man was driving a car near the corner of 17th and Garfield around 8 p.m. on Monday.

When the road ended, police said he kept driving and went through a parking lot and eventually plowed through several people's backyards.

Eventually the car ended up at Westmooreland Village near 16th and Garfield Street.

Resident Steven Ferro said the car drove at least 100 yards before coming to a half after crashing into his porch deck.

Ferro said the car flew up into a fence, scraped passed a jacuzzi, and landed in his neighbor's backyard.

"All of a sudden we heard smash, crash, boom, bang," Ferro said. "We ran out the back door and everything in our backyard was from our neighbor's yard. You could not even tell, it looked like a plane literally crashed in our backyard."

Authorities said the man fled on foot, but he was later detained at the corner of 11th and Garfield.

Police arrested the driver, Joshua David Hudson, on charges of hit and run, resisting arrest, interfering with police and firefighters, criminal mischief and reckless driving.

Police still do not know why he ran off the road and kept driving through a series of backyards.
