Legal or not? If you can buy it at a stand in Oregon, it's probably legal. If your cousin brought it from Idaho and had to sign an affidavit agreeing not to set it off before he got to Oregon, think twice.

EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene City Council passed a fireworks ordinance limiting the number of days when legal fireworks can be used inside the city limits.

Councilors voted 6 to 2 in favor of limiting fireworks to December 31 and January 1, and June 23 through July 6.

The city may allow groups to use fireworks outside of those time periods with prior approval.

The council also voted to add unlawful use of fireworks to the social host ordinance law.

The changes will take effect as soon as Tuesday once Mayor Kitty Piercy signs the ordinance.

Most council members voiced concern about how the city will enforce the use of fireworks - and said that illegal fireworks are responsible for most complaints.

"Don't put more restrictions and create expectations on folks who want to celebrate quietly in front of their house and their street when the real problem are those using illegal fireworks," Councilor Mike Clark.

"I have heard from so many people who are glad we're finally doing something about fireworks," Councilor Betty Taylor said, "and I think that limiting the days is just one step."

Fireworks Turn In Event June 28

This year, a one-time fireworks turn in has been scheduled. Private parties may turn in commercially manufactured retail fireworks without being cited or arrested for possession of illegal fireworks.

The turn in event is Saturday, June 28, at Emergency Services Training Center front lot at 2nd and Chambers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until the limitied storage is filled.
