City signs contract to fund Laurelwood golf course

EUGENE, Ore. -- Despite a budget gap, the city of Eugene will provide funding to Laurelwood golf course.

Eugene officials and managers for the city’s only municipal golf course have agreed to a new five-year contract.

Laurelwood will get a $100,000 parks subsidy for 2013 and a one-time $45,000 payment for course improvements through the year.

Course manager Debbie King said the goal of the improvements is getting more people to play.

“The course does fantastic June, July and August … even sometimes September and October.  It's a matter of making the course more playable during the rainy season,” said King.

Part of the new contract states that any future subsidies will be worked out year by year.

Eugene parks officials said that closing the golf course property and maintaining it for future buyers would cost more money in the long run.
