City signs contract to fund Laurelwood golf course

EUGENE, Ore. -- Despite a budget gap, the city of Eugene will provide funding to Laurelwood golf course.
Eugene officials and managers for the city’s only municipal golf course have agreed to a new five-year contract.
Laurelwood will get a $100,000 parks subsidy for 2013 and a one-time $45,000 payment for course improvements through the year.
Course manager Debbie King said the goal of the improvements is getting more people to play.
“The course does fantastic June, July and August … even sometimes September and October. It's a matter of making the course more playable during the rainy season,” said King.
Part of the new contract states that any future subsidies will be worked out year by year.
Eugene parks officials said that closing the golf course property and maintaining it for future buyers would cost more money in the long run.
This is exactly what I mean:Â "Despite a budget gap, the city of Eugene will provide funding to Laurelwood golf course."
This is what I've been talking about! The above reason is the exact reason that the City of Eugene doesn't have any money. Yet they are giving a golf course money! They just continue to spend, spend and spend some more. There is no responsibility, or accountability for their actions. And the taxpayers in Eugene continue to allow this!
They (City of Eugene) are asking the taxpayer for households inside all three districts, the measures add up to about $245 per year - $42 for schools, $83 for public safety and $120 for city fees.
But here they are spending money they don't have (taxpayer money) on a golf course! When will they (City of Eugene) and we (taxpayer) learn they are never going to stop this irresponsible spending if we (taxpayer) don't say NO MORE!?!
These people in power in Eugene, (the mayor, the city counsel members and the city manager) are arrogant, immoral, and irresponsible!
I'm so damn sick of it!
The city should sell the golf course. The city needs those funds for other more important projects, not to subsidize a summer activity for the wealthy.
Aren't park funds meant to be used on city owned public parks and not private ventures? How is this not a "Fraud, Waste and Abuse" issue in the governments spending of tax dollars? Everyone needs to remember this kind of wasteful spending when ballots come around and the city wants that $10 service tax to help pay for parks and wildlife.
@Twistthewrist It is owned by the city and is considered a park so there is no abuse or fraud. That would have been the fraud that they spent the money on the occupy people.
I would like to how many city employee's get free golf. Since it's our taxes that support this course we should get free golf.
