City works to repair Columns on Skinner Butte

EUGENE, Ore. - City officials closed a section of a rock wall used by climbers after spring rains caused the rocks to crumble.

The City of Eugene fenced off the south section of the Columns on Skinner Butte two months ago for safety reasons. A project is in the works to restore and reinforce the wall.

"I think a lot of climbers are going to be happy to get that section opened and climb on it and try sections they haven't been climbing in a long time," said climber Brian Chenoweth.

Roger Bailey with the City of Eugene said the first stage of the project was pouring concrete at the base to stabalize some of the rocks.

The second stage is set to begin in September.

The city will remove loose rocks and repair the screen that's on part of the column.

The entire site will be closed from Sept. 22 to Sept. 30 to accomodate that work.
