Coast Guard member charged with rape

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — North Bend police arrested a member of the U.S. Coast Guard who is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.
The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports that 20-year-old Luke Kanada of North Bend was conditionally released from jail Thursday after being charged with third-degree rape and other crimes.
Police say the charges stem from a relationship Kanada and the girl had this summer.
Kanada's arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
Your response is an odd one UsaidWHAT:Â
First you declare it's not rape, then you acknowledge that you're aware of her being under age...so you evidently know the basics of the law. You must not be aware however, that it's the responsibility of the individual who's 18+ to know not to engage in sexual relations with minors. It's NOT the responsibility of the minor or the minor's parents. By legal definition, sex with a minor, whether consensual or forced, is rape.Â
That is just not "rape"!!! Yes she is under age and he made a bad choice but for his entire life to be ruined because he had a consensual sexual relationship is just wrong! And now he will have to register as a sex offender!!! Parents need to teach their little girls that when they mess around with a boy that is over 18 they will ruin the boys life by calling rape!!!
@UsaidWHAT I agree that parents need to teach their girls that having sex with ANYONE is wrong when they are this age, HOWEVER...what about parents teaching their boys NOT to sleep with little girls????? Like it or not, this IS "statutory rape". No, it should not carry the same sentence as forcible rape, but it is still WRONG. A 15 year old girl is not mature enough to make good decisions. "Consensual" sex is something that happens between ADULTS.

@SwiftlyJust @UsaidWHAT And it doesn't carry the same sentence.. Max for Rape Third is 5 years; Rape One max is 20 years and Rape Two Max is 10 years. And Rape I and II are Measure 11 Crimes so Mandatory minimums are: 1st degree Rape 8 years, 4 months;  2nd degree Rape 6 years, 3 months If she had been under 14 he would be looking at 2nd Degree, under 12 years old 1st Degree.   And not knowing she is under age is absolutely no defense.....even if she lied to him.
