Cold snap sets new record lows for North Bend, Eugene
On Tuesday, KVAL chief meteorologist Candace Campos forecast a low of 18 F overnight for Eugene. She got that one right on the money. The actual lows overnight for Roseburg and North Bend, however, registered a degree colder than forecast.

NORTH BEND, Ore. - Today may be the coldest December 4 in more than a century on the South Coast.

A 40-year-old record low for Eugene appears likely to fall, too.

Sensors at the North Bend Municipal Airport recorded a low of 27 F sometime between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Even if the mercury doesn't plummet even lower before midnight, 2013 will go down as the coldest December 4 on record. The previous record low of 28 was set back in 1903.

The cold snap of 1972 set a record low temperature of 20 in Eugene. But Wednesday morning, thermometers at the Eugene Airport registered just 18 F.

That's the first time Eugene has been 18 degrees since December 9, 2009.

Roseburg was cold in 1972, too - 19 F on December 4. The low so far Wednesday of 23 won't be a new record, but it's still plenty cold.
