CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A Corvallis Elementary School will soon be receiving a much-needed update to it's playground, all thanks to one student's sweepstakes entry.
Nickelodeon will be putting $10,000 towards installing a playground at a Wilson Elementary School in Corvallis.
The popular children's TV network picked Sophia Martin's entry as the winner for their playground sweepstakes.
Martin's entry stated how Wilson Elementary was in desperate need of new equipment. Sophia said that the whole school is looking forward to having the new equipment to play on during recess.
Wilson Elementary will be putting the money toward a structure estimated to cost around $60,000. The school is organizing fundraisers to get the remaining money and anticipates that they can move forward on the project in Spring.
Wilson school? Really? Apparently Nickelodeon was not aware of the huge "Wildcat Park" as in Wilson Wildcats that already exists at that school and was just (re)built in 2007. Do a search for "Wildcat Park Corvallis" and take a look.Â

Congrats to her for having the winning essay but I can think of about a million schools in more "desperate need of new playground equipment" than Wilson.

@Corvallis Resident As the above poster commented, Wildcat park does not belong to the school. The students do not have access to it during recess. And "huge" is relative. It safely allows about 30 children to play, hardly enough for the population of an entire elementary school.
Â
And for those other "million" schools: I'm sure some of them also won this prize as there were several first prize awards of $10,000, and a grand prize of considerably more.  Since you are so concerned for those other schools, I hope you (or your children) submitted entries on those schools' behalf. Those "million" schools can't win if no one entered.
Â
Gotta love the haters. A motivated and caring 8-yr old did a great thing for her school, and someone will ALWAYS find a reason to complain.Â
@Corvallis Resident
Wildcat Park does not belong to the school (it's a public park) AND the children are not allowed in Wildcat Park for recess.
