Corvallis sushi chef drowns fishing Metolius River

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) — Rescue crews in Central Oregon have recovered the body of a Corvallis sushi chef from the Metolius River, where he'd been fishing from the shore.

The Jefferson County sheriff's office says 62-year-old Isamu "Sam" Furuichi stumbled and fell into the swift river on Monday.

The Bend Bulletin reports that kayakers found his body 2.3 miles downstream on Tuesday. He was wearing chest waders but not a life jacket. The sheriff's department says alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played a role in the accident.
