Cottage Grove investigates alleged theft of city money
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. - A city employee exploited a weakness in a computer system to embezzle money, Cottage Grove officials said Monday.
City Manager Richard Meyers said an internal investigation started January 16a fter staff discovered problems with city utility accounts.
So far, investigators believe a city employee exploited a weakness in the computer system to embezzle money.
Meyers did not say how much money was taken but said private, personal info was not in danger.
The employee was placed on administrative leave at the time and is not employed by the city at this time.
The Cottage Grove Police Department is leading the investigation.
This is a developing story
i wanna know if it was someone that collects the water payments. Something fishy has been going on with peoples water bills. I imagine they'll keep it all private, they wouldn't want to admit that they actually were wrong. I know a person that got there water shutoff two months in a row. this shouldn't be possible since you have to be 2 months behind to get it shut off. when it gets turned off you have to pay the entire bill to get it back on. Also they charged a reconnection fee each time. My neighbor had to pay a reconnect fee the other day and there water didn't get turned off, evidently the employee screwed up and didn't turn it off. My neighbor paid it and because it was suppose to be off he got charged the reconnect fee in addition to his late bills. Its pretty crappy how the city can take advantage of people when they run the water company, it should be a separate company.
So what else is new? Every government has the same problem and they can't figure it out.
