EUGENE, Ore. - Trees are coming down and fencing is going up around the area that will be a new skatepark in Washington-Jefferson Park.

The Eugene Parks and Open Space Department is cleaning up the poorly lit area under the bridge to make it safer and more inviting for local families and children.

"It's hard to see into the parks and it really fostered a lot of negative activities," said Emily Proudfoot with the City of Eugene. "Today, we're seeing a lot of site demolition, clearing, and grading in preparation for putting in new utilities and getting the site ready for new construction."

After the leveling, the old bathroom will be demolished and replaced.

New construction on the skatepark itself under the bridge should begin by early September. Proponents believe it will be the largest covered skatepark in the nation.
