Crews searching for missing hiker near Marion County lake

PORTLAND, Ore. – Rescue crews are searching a remote area of the Willamette National Forest for a hiker who hasn’t been seen since Thursday, Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

52-year-old Ronald Ohm of Portland was separated from his party near Russell Lake, about one mile north of Mt. Jefferson, deputies said.

The group was hiking near a ridge above Russell Lake Thursday afternoon when Ohm decided to stop to take some photos. The others went ahead to set up camp, but Ohm never arrived.

His hiking partners searched for him on Friday and later hiked out of the area to call for help. Marion County deputies began their search Saturday morning.

Around a 50 member search party is working a 15 by 20 mile area of remote and isolated wilderness. The area has snow at elevations of 6000' and 80 to 90 degree tempratures in other areas, putting an additional strain on the searchers.

Two rescue planes and helicopters from the Oregon Army National Guard have joined in the search effort.

Deputies said Ohm is an experienced hiker and has enough supplies to last him through Sunday. He’s carrying a tent and sleeping bag.

Searchers have contacted many campers in the area and asked them to keep an eye out for Ohm. MCSO is asking anyone who was hiking or camping in the area that may have seen Ohm on Thursday or Friday to call (503) 932-8002.
