DA: Man dead, person of interest sought after reported fight

BANDON, Ore. -- A man is dead, and the district attorney is asking for help in finding another man, after it was reported they were fighting prior to the death.

Just before 11:30 pm on Thursday, the Coos Bay 911 center received at least 2 calls regarding a fight at 87791 Bills Creek Road, which is located just outside of Bandon.

When officers arrived, they say they found William Mathew Drews, 42, of California, lying on the ground.

Medical crews took the man to the hospital, where the DA says he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say the incident is being investigated as a possible homicide.

Police say they have developed a person of interest in the case, identifying him as Coy Daniel Smith, 40, of Bandon.

Authorities say they are looking for anyone who might know Smith or where he is to come forward.

The District Attorney Paul Frasier is encouraging the public not to contact Smith, but to notify the Coos County Sheriff's office if you see him.

The Coos County Major Crime Team has been activated. The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency on this case. Officers from Coos Bay Police, North Bend Police, Oregon State Police, Bandon Police Department, Coquille Tribal Police and the District Attorney’s Office responded to assist in the investigation.
