Sheriff investigating man's death as homicide

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -  A body found by loggers last January has been identified by DNA as a man reported missing in 2005.

The death of Roy Vernon Mathews is being investigated as a homicide, the Lane County Sheriff's Office said.

Mathews would be 61 if still alive today. His girlfriend reportedhim mssing to the Springfield Police Department in April 2005.

Loggers found skeletal remains on a remote patch of land of Siuslaw River Road on January 12, 2012.

Deputies recovered the remains, and the State Medical Examiner used DNA to identified the dead person as Mathews.

The sheriff's office said there is evidence Mathews died as a result of foul play.
