EUGENE, Ore. -- A passenger in a stolen pickup truck died when the vehicle crashed into a semi truck parked along Interstate 5 Tuesday, Oregon State Police said.
The crash happened at about 7 a.m. Tuesday on I-5 southbound near the Highway 58 junction.
Officials say Joseph Dana Theriault, 28, of Portland was driving a pickup south when he drifted onto the shoulder and struck the trailer of a disabled commercial truck parked on the side of the road.
Passenger Christina Marie Armstrong, 22, from Cape Coral, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Police said Armstrong had recently moved to Portland.
Theriault was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Upon his release from the hospital, Theriault was taken into custody on a charge of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and booked into the Lane County Jail.
Officials said the semi truck had warning reflectors placed behind the trailer.
Troopers are continuing to look into what caused the pickup to drift off the road.
The Oregon Department of Transportation reported delays after closing the interstate to one lane for about an hour and a half while crews cleared the scene.
