Deputies: Corvallis woman struck, killed while checking mail

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- An 89-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car, apparently while checking her mail south of Corvallis on Tuesday.
Deputies were called to the area of Fern Road and SW Airport Road in Benton County at about 12:45 p.m., and found Hannelore Zimmerman, 89, deceased at the scene.
Deputies say it appears Zimmerman was going to get her mail from her mailbox when she was struck by a vehicle being driven by Donna Bolt, 65, of Corvallis.
Authorities say the initial investigation suggests that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and at this point, there is no known cause.
The Corvallis Police Department and OSP assisted in the crash investigation, and Philomath and Corvallis Fire Responded for medical assistance.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Benton County Sheriff's Office at 541-766-6858.
Wasn't there another one of these last week? What's going on around here, anyway?
@EugeneGuy ---yes there was, in cottage grove i think, another 60 something female driving and not paying attention. Sometimes grammas have too much on their minds these days what with this terrible economy? Or maybe there are so many people making trips to the mail box this time of year.
Whatever the reason, whacking a non-moving pedestrian in front of/on their property is the most heinous form of driver negligence, no matter how involuntary the manslaughter. Rest in peace Great Grandma Hannelore. Such a pretty name. Never heard it before.
@EugeneGuy Could it be lack of attention on the part of the driver, or maybe lack of attention on both the driver and the pedestrian.Â
