Civil War shirts sell fast as the game approaches

EUGENE, Ore. - Duck-themed merchandise was flying off the racks at the UO bookstore on Friday as fans gear up for the Civil War game.

Employees said that the new "Civil War" T-shirts were the most popular sale on Black Friday.

"It sold out on-line the first day we had it," said Katie Conway, Marketing Director for the Duck Store.

Conway said that sales started to lull after last Saturday's loss to Stanford. However, a renewed interest brought on by the Civil War has many fans returning to the Duck Store.

"It's huge," said Mike Tessier, a Duck fan.

"I had to get a new T-shirt for the Civil War game," said Duck fan Whitney Root.

This year's Civil War game is even catching the attention of an Expedia travel writer Jeremy Branham.

Branham travels to college games all over the country and chose to feature the Civil War game on his website - www.budgettraveladventures.com.

"I think one thing that's great about this game that you don't find in a lot of rivalry games is how close these two schools are to each other," Branham said.

Branham will be in Corvallis this weekend highlighting eating places and tourist attractions in Beaver country.

The travel writer said he couldn't pick a better year to come to Reser Stadium.

"It's just pretty amazing that these schools are having such a good season," Branham said. "Oregon was expected, but Oregon state not expected. It's going to make for a good game."

As for Duck fans in Eugene, they're hopeful for a win this Civil War.

"I think after their big loss they need to come back and prove a point," Tessier said.

"I think they're probably going to make it a tough game for the Beavers and I'm sure we'll pull out a win in the end," Root said.

The very first Civil War game was played back in 1894, and many consider this college football rivalry game to be one of the most heated in the country.
