EUG says 'aloha' to direct Honolulu flights

EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Airport welcomed in the first of many regularly-scheduled Boeing 757 aircraft to make the direct flight from Honolulu to Eugene.

Allegiant Air officials said that this is the first time that a regular 757, non-stop service will be offered from Hawaii to Eugene.

The first 757 from Hawaii taxied down the tarmac underneath an arch of water on Saturday afternoon. Allegiant said that this is a tradition at many airports to welcome new scheduled aircraft routes.

Eugene Airport Director Cathryn Stephens said that she expects to see more growth from the airline as time goes on.

"They've grown pretty exponentially since they've arrived here five years ago, so we expect to see a continued growth to new routes and sunny places." Stephens said.

The Eugene Fire Station's Airport crew blasted the water arch over the plane.

Allegiant also began a non-stop service to Palm Springs, California.
