CHESHIRE, Ore. -- A man died after he drove off of Highway 36 late Saturday morning and crashed into a tree, Oregon State Police said.
Officials said that Paul Templeton, 72 of Cheshire, was driving east on the Mapleton-Junction City Highway (OR-36) Saturday morning. Just before 11 a.m. Templeton missed a slight turn in the road, continued across the opposite lane and left the roadway near milepost 41.
Templeton continued through the grass alongside Highway 36 and crashed his GMC pickup truck head-on into a tree, police said.
Emergency responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. He had been wearing a seat belt when he crashed.
The Oregon Department of Transportation closed down one lane of Highway 36 for about three hours while crash investigators and emergency crews worked the scene.
