Eugene votes in favor of plastic bag ban, opposes coal trains

EUGENE, Ore. - It was a packed house at the Eugene City Council meeting Monday night as the city council voted on two heated issues.
At the end of the night, the council decided to pass a plastic bag ban and they opposed bringing coal trains through Eugene.
The Eugene City Council voted 6 to 2 in favor of banning plastic bags.
Council members don't know when that ban will go into effect.
Lane County Management said the plastic bags are recyclable, but the number of bags they actually see recycled is going down.
They expect more people are throwing them away and sending them to landfills.
Also on the agenda Monday night, the Eugene City Council voted 5 -3 to discourage coal trains from passing through Eugene.
There is a plan to bring coal trains from Wyoming to Coos Bay through the city, but the agreement isn't official yet.
However, the Eugene City Council decided to vote against it anyways.
Some council members said they are not sure if they have the authority to ban the trains since it's regulated by the federal government, and treated this vote as a symbolic message.
Springfield rules, now I'll never go into that democratic heck hole again. Coal is the wave of the future and the liberals and their ponzi schemes are all using their money to block our energy! Open your eyes and don't let them steal our energy source, coal is clean now, I don't know all the science because no one does, but they wouldn't just start calling it clean coal for no reason. We need to put more trust in these massive energy corporations otherwise nothing will ever get done and gas will keep going up. I can't keep paying this much to fill my truck, it's insane how little 12mpg seems when gas is this much.

But look we shouldn't ever have to change our lifestyles if we don't want to. Freedom is what our forefathers fought for, and no it's not free. Unless you are weird or into really questionable things or something else that effects other people, in that case you should be made to change. But plastic only effects... you guessed it no one! What's more important Eugene, anti-christian values or our freedom????
Â
Plastic only goes in landfills where there's already trash everywhere. Look, just because we can try to limit some of the trash doesn't mean we should because there's still other trash out there!!!! Unless we can fix the whole problem all at once then what's the point!????? Plus who can afford the 5 pennies per bag thing? Do they think everyone's as rich as them? They're so out of touch. That adds up, if you go shopping once a week and use 2 bags and refuse to bring a reusable bag each time (because that's your right and choice) then it will cost you $5.20 for the entire year!!!!! THAT'S INSANE, that's almost a McDonald's meal, the government is literally stealing food from me. Thanks a lot Obamacare.
Â
My friend was telling me that his second cousin had worked in a coal mine and it wasn't that bad, so if it's not bad for the people mining it then it can't be bad to have miles of uncovered trains bringing it through town. Plus everything happens for a reason that's because the lord our savior is in charge of what happens and he wouldn't have had us make coal or plastic bags unless we were supposed to.Â
Â
Jesus 4 life. Save your soul. I saved mine. Find the lord, the one and only, before it's too late.
Stupid is as stupid does. What about everything else that ends up in landfills that shouldn't? Is this ban going to stop that too? The city of Eugene has just become a pathetic joke.
Time to vote these progtards out. I will be shopping in Springfield from now on. Sorry Eugene businesses but your government does not like or respect you.
@Bumpy People said the same thing when bars started becoming no-smoking. I'll take my drink elsewhere!  But then you didn't.  You'll shop in Eugene.  Don't lie to yourself. Â
@sm97402 And nobody dies from lung cancer or heart disease anymore. Thank you bars for banning smoking!
@Bumpy  @sm97402 I certainly hope you're being facetious Bumpy! I'm guessing that you are...because sm97402 is clearly a progressive liberal kool-aid drinker who can't think for him/herself. People like this need Kitty and company to make their decisions FOR them because they clearly know what is best for the rest of us! Why should we be allowed to vote for anything? We're obviously just not as smart as they are.
I like the way the headline says "Eugene votes"...no we, the people of Eugene, don't get that privilege...and when we do, it gets thrown out and the only votes that get counted are the city council!!!
This is good news about the bags.

I'm so tired of City Council voting on these kinds of bans and measures that affect all of us. Don't tell me this couldn't have been put to public vote, just like with the Emx issue. The claim that putting these issues to a pulbic vote would take too much time and be too costly was just an excuse. These issues have been under consideration and discussion for a long time now..and plenty of public opposition has been monstrated. Obviously the required "consideration" of our public input is only a formality and really isn't taken into consideration. They don't let us vote because they don't want us in control of the outcome. We just got our ballots in the mail that include State and County measures. They had enough time that these issues could've been included. Instead they refuse to let the public as a whole vote and do things strcitly according to their own agenda. These "votes" do NOT reflect the desires of the public, only the council-members for their own reasons. Pretty disgusting!!
Why stop at plastic bags. Lets ban all types of bags and containers
Are the council members really this foolish or just blinded with delusions of grandeur? Surely they realize they are pawns in a much grander scheme? Look at the targeted cities of this ban movement. Major cities in each major county of the state. Why? Because SB 536 hasn't passed and the people behind the bill want to force your representatives hand. It is a dirty, underhanded political move.
and also coal won't hurt the city since it's not being burnt so they're just being retarded.
I foresee kitty crap on the city councils door step every other morning in a paper bag. asking for a .05 refund.
This is typical Progressive Liberalism. They preach democracy, but they do not practice democracy. They know that the only way that they can achieve the agendas of diseased minds is to fill their ranks with like minded people. This results in being able to dictate rather than allow the people to decide. It is called absolute power, which can and usually does breed corruption. The Eugene City Council is made up of Progressive Liberals, they have even secured the position of tie breaker (in the unusual event that should be needed) with a Progressive Liberal. They know what is better for you than you do. This is what in their minds makes them elite and exceptional. It is a disease of the mind, and people need to stand up and vote them out of office.
Well Eugene, you get what you vote for!
I'm surprised we can even dress ourselves anymore. These progressive councilors think they have a right to dictate how other's live their lives. No solutions to problems just ban the activity. How about creating recycling incentives like 2 cents a bag whatever. This ban will cause more Oregonians to lose jobs and end up on the democrat voting rolls. I pray the federal government has the authority to run these coal trains right through their council chambers!!!!
HELLO.....Springfield,,, home to Winco..Freddys..Wal mart..Albertsons..etc.. all of which won't be banning plastic bags..or charging for paper bags..So ..it will take more time to do shopping over there..but at least I would rather spend it in the gas I use to commute over there,,than to be held hostage to paying for paper bags in Eugene to carry my groceries home in.Clearly... the Eugene city council doesn't ever support the constituents that put them into office,,The voice of the people is never actually ever considered ..they continuously do as they want,,and then make claim its what all Eugeneans want..but yet..it never goes to a public vote..Makes ya have to wonder about that...
@Whitehawk  We welcome your business in the still free city of Springfield.
A "symbolic" message? Soooo, a waste of time then? Doesn't city council have better things to do? Then again, nevermind... I'd rather they waste all their time than do things like sticking their big noses between me and private businesses. I know those on the city council can afford to pay a little extra for reusable or paper bags, but last I checked not everyone is so lucky. And I guess on top of that I'll be buying bags to put my cat's litter and dog's feces in. Should I just drop the bags full of poo off at city hall for them to recycle it? After all, it really needs to stop going into landfills.Â
That chamber could have been packed with 300 supporters of the coal train and it wouldn't have made any difference. Much like the Veneta idiots who run that city, the leaders of Eugene have already made up their minds on an issue LONG before they do the legal and obligatory thing of asking for public input.Â
Â
What a sham!
