Crews burn prairie in West Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. - Neighbors and drivers, beware: fire crews plan to burn 200 acres in West Eugene Tuesday morning, the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department said.

The controlled burn for ecological restoration is scheduled to start around 10 a.m., said Lance Lighty, a fire department battalion chief.

Prescribed fires can encourage native plants to grow - or discourage wildfires from burning out of control.

He encouraged drivers to avoid or use extreme caution in the Royal Avenue and Greenhill Road in West Eugene.
