Family dog dies from smoke inhalation in house fire

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A pet dog died from smoke inhalation when a laundry room caught fire in family home Wednesday afternoon.

The family of four was not at home at the time of the fire.

A neighbor called 911 to report smoke from from the house in the 1400 block of 58th Street just before 3 p.m.

Firefighters found flames in the laundry room when they arrived. Crews kept the fire from spreading beyond the laundry room, but smoke spread throughout the two-story house, the fire department said.

Crews had the fire under control within 27 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, with the clothes dryer are possible culprit.

Firefighters said the family would be displaced for an unknown period of time due to significant smoke damage throughout the structure.
