EUGENE, Ore. - Two people died after a car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an SUV on Highway 126 Wednesday afternoon.

One of the drivers died at the scene.

The other driver died Thursday morning at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

State police said a Toyota Prius crossed into oncoming traffic on Hwy 126 between Veneta and Eugene around 1:10 p.m. and hit an oncoming Toyota 4Runner SUV.

The driver of the Toyota Prius - 78-year-old Brunhilde Maria Watkins of Veneta - died at the scene.

Firefighters pulled Kirk Gerard Rinaldi, 47, of Dorena from the wreckage of his 4Runner and rushed him to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in serious condition.

Rinaldi died as a result of his injuries Thursday morning, state police said.

Investigators at the scene Wednesday said they were trying to determine what led Watkins to cross into oncoming traffic on the straight stretch of highway.

The highway was closed for more than 3 hours after the crash.
