Joe and Jeff Berry visit Pre's Rock

EUGENE, Ore. - Joe Berry and his father Jeff came to Eugene from Kansas City, Mo., to watch the Prefontaine Classic, run on Pre's Trail and visit Pre's Rock, the memorial on the rocky roadside near Hendricks Park where Steve Prefontaine died in a car accident 39 years ago to the day.

Prefontaine is often quoted as saying: "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift."

Joe Berry spoke about what Pre and distance running have meant to him.

"It's the self discipline that you have to have, the determination, and I think it gives you a lot of hope in all aspects of things that you do," he said. "I think it's a real motivation and something you'll be able to do the rest of your life, and I think that's what Pre was trying to foster: that sense of strength in everybody."
