Father with 3 kids in car arrested for DUI
PORTLAND, Ore. - Police say a man driving from the Oregon coast to southwest Washington with his three children was arrested for investigation of drunken driving after the car stalled at the base of the Sellwood Bridge near Macadam.
Lt. Robert King says officers responded to a report of a stalled car Monday evening and wound up arresting Daniel Lee Sherman. King says they later learned that the children had been texting their grandmother with concerns about their father's driving.
The 34-year-old man was arrested for investigation of DUI, reckless driving and three counts of reckless endangerment.
King says the children — ages 12, 9 and 3 — were released to the custody of their grandmother, who lives in Woodland, Wash.
Sherman reportedly was making a 250-mile trip from Coos Bay, Ore., to La Center, Wash.
With his mother's permission, Sherman's son told KATU News by phone that his father went to the liquor store, bought some vodka and began drinking behind the wheel.
"I texted my grandma saying he was drunk driving and she called. And a couple minutes later we ran out of gas," he said. "Then the cop showed up and we told him what happened and another cop showed up and he arrested him and my grandma came."
Sherman was still in jail Tuesday night.
